The Red Knight by Miles Cameron6/25/2023 ![]() Aydis may not be a knight by title, but she’s a warrior (with a trusty steed) who sets out on a quest to bring justice to gods and mortals alike. This graphic novel series follows Aydis, a young Viking woman who’s been exiled because of her queer identity. Cyrenic is one of the Sleepless, and his charge is the Lady Pyppenia, besieged by threats as a new king is crowned. In this upturned fairytale, we’re introduced to the Sleepless, an order of knights sworn to remain awake at all times-knowing they’ll eventually go mad. ![]() 1 by Sarah Vaughn, Leila Del Duca, Alissa Sallah, and Deron Bennett What’s a hero without her chainmail? Sleepless, Vol. Which is all well and good, but some like apprentice knight Kalanthe Ironheart struggle with life after the quest. Having ended an ancient evil and saved the realm, a cadre of returning female knights are hailed as heroes. The idea of gallant soldiers, mounted or sword-wielding as they may be, serving their sovereigns and societies crosses cultures, borders, and genders.Ĭheck out a few favorite books with knights that will sweep you off your feet-in one way or another. (I think I can speak for many fellow millennials about the power of Heath Ledger in A Knight’s Tale.) But that’s not the only version of a knight. ![]() ![]() Sure, that’s one version of a knight, and a glamorous, seductive one at that. When you hear the word “knight,” do you think of the chaps in the clanging armor? The men-always men-who break their lances in jousts and strut about rescuing princesses from various castles? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It’s with Brian she finds a companion and she finds someone she can just talk to. Perhaps the biggest problem with the Shwenk family is that they don’t talk, and D.J. shows him the ropes of the farm….and how to condition so he can become the star quarterback of the Hawley football team. But the summer before her sophomore year, Brian Nelson comes by and informs her he needs to be helping on the farm. Schwenk’s the only girl on the farm, and with dad having problems and mom being so busy with work, she’s become the default farm worker. Hawley games that always bring out the towns in huge numbers.ĭ.J. And what’s Wisconsin without a major high school football rivalry? The Schwenks have two college players - Win at University of Washington and Bill at the University of Minnesota - who lives to tell the tales of the big Red Bend vs. The Dairy Queen introduces readers to the Schwenk family, living on a farm in Red Bend, Wisconsin. Catherine Gilbert Murdock’s Dairy Queen series has been a very quiet set of books, receiving fewer nods than it deserves, but I think this final book may in fact help establish this as one of the best reads for girls of any age - with no foul language and a few sweet kisses as the most risque scene in book three, this will please readers and parents alike. One of my favorite series of books is wrapping up with the final episode, Front and Center, in a couple of weeks. ![]() Outsmarting Worry by Dawn Huebner6/25/2023 ![]() ![]() She is the author of 9 books, including the bestselling What to Do When You Worry Too Much and more recent, Outsmarting Worry.ĭr. ![]() Huebner’s books Dawn Huebner, PhD, is a Clinical Psychologist specializing in the treatment of anxious children and their parents. Katherine Applegate blends humor and poignancy to create Ivan's unforgettable first-person narration in a story of friendship, art, and hope. When Ruby arrives, change comes with her, and it's up to Ivan to make it a change for the better. Then he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from her family, and she makes Ivan see their home - and his own art - through new eyes. ![]() But mostly Ivan thinks about art and how to capture the taste of a mango or the sound of leaves with color and a well-placed line. Instead, Ivan thinks about TV shows he's seen and about his friends Stella, an elderly elephant, and Bob, a stray dog. In fact, he hardly ever thinks about it at all. Living at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade, he has grown accustomed to humans watching him through the glass walls of his domain. ![]() Book broken in the best possible way6/24/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() But I am still glad I read it, and I still laughed out loud over and over again while reading it. Oh well! It made me feel like the balance of funny, poignant, and coarse elements was a little off in this book and heavy on coarse. When she suggested skipping the chapter if you’re under seventeen, I should have realized I wouldn’t find it particularly funny. A chapter toward the end with Shark Tank ideas went way overboard for me. For me, personally, there were far more mentions of penises than I ever want to think about. The chapter about her dealings with her insurance company, trying to get life-saving care paid for, was infuriating and horrible – and I’m glad she’s going public with that story.īut also in the mix are sections of, shall we say, coarse humor, with many, many mentions of gender-specific body parts. I’ve found that her books are a mix of laugh-out-loud humor and poignancy – especially when they talk about her struggles with mental and physical illnesses. Her books are sure to make me laugh out loud in many spots, and this one is no exception. She blogs as The Bloggess, and is indeed the queen of humor. What: And I Darken (The Conqueror’s Saga #1) by Kiersten White ![]() ![]() ![]() The book explores Hong Kong as a place with a unique identity, yet also as a crossroads where Chinese history, British colonial history, and world history intersect. John Carroll's engrossing and accessible narrative explores the remarkable history of Hong Kong from the early 1800s through the post–1997 handover, when this former colony became a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. Melding Chinese and Western influences, Hong Kong has long defied easy categorization. When the British occupied the tiny island of Hong Kong during the First Opium War, the Chinese empire was well into its decline, while Great Britain was already in the second decade of its legendary "Imperial Century."
